My love affair with portrait photography is becoming more intense, what is it I am searching for? How do I explain my feelings, my passion for portraiture, my feelings are full of honesty, sincerity to connect and seek the warmth and character of those that visit our studio, I wish to deliver portraits that capture an essence of the inner person, some of us once we shut our front door relax a little into our own world, with no one watching or judging us for our actions or the way we look; I think it is this that I hope to discover. What an incredibly difficult task I set myself, as sitting to have ones image taken is in itself something that is quite intimate, building trust between two people, people I have met for the first time or have known for a long while, each situation brings it’s own challenges. I do believe I still have much to learn I look to my husband Darren and my partner at our studio, to me he is a very talented photographer, to the other artists that I admire those who are talented with paints, pencils and organic creativity and I look on in awe and wonder will I ever acheive their level of excellence, is photography a match for the masters of pencil and brush? Below is a portrait of Michael York an extremely talented artist and musician and now founder member alongside his sister Tiggy (of previous blog) of a new arts and music academy. We wish them all the best with their new project, you can find out more about them in the March publication of the Ocelot magazine, where our writer Dan Moody will enlighten you all with his interview with Tiggy and Michael.
There is one key thing that I wish to mention, something that I cherish and always surprises me even though I know it is a fact, that is with each slight movement of eyebrow or position of head or gesture can change the emotion of a portrait, I find this extremely fascinating, I think you can see from the images of Michael above both quite similar in composition but different in emotion. What do you think?
Interesting. To me in the first photo he looks more vulnerable whereas in the 2nd photo he has a more commanding look.
