Wychwood Festival 2011 was not such a distant memory for us, but time flies by so quickly and Wychwood 2012 was upon us before we could catch our breath, this is the first festival of the season for Darren and I and a festival we feel a connection with, we managed to catch up with one of the founder organisers Graeme Merrifield to chat to him how the festival was going, the promotions team from Full Fat always welcome us warmly and the fantastic festival staff at Wychwood with their unwavering cheeriness all together again, we gel as though time has not passed, it is definitely feels like of a family reunion – the Wychwood family!
The friendly atmosphere and vibe continues throughout the whole site, even with some rain festival goers continued to enjoy themselves, luckily we were blessed with more sunshine than showers, it was a weekend of relaxation and a chance to enjoy the musical line up. Puttyfoot had a few high lights, Saturday headline act James was a firm favourite, but amongst others who scored highly were Juju (Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara) Robin Ince Science who shared his quirky insights to science with twists and humour he performed to a packed out big top! Hawkwind put on an amazing creative performance, the beautiful Sharon Shannon, Show of Hands, Sean Lakeman with Kathryn Roberts, The Outcast band we saw the year before in Oxford delivered another dynamic performance. There were two surprising acts who stood out to me for different reasons, with a vintage act like Dr and the Medics, it was great to see that their delivery was fresh and entertaining, their spark seemed to switch on the festival atmosphere. The other act was Duke Special, I had anticipated a good performance but just how wonderful his live performance was really lifted my spirits, his vocals and engaging presence on stage surpassed my expectations, he is certainly an artist to keep an eye on. The new discovery for us was a young band called the Affairs from Hull who made a good impression, they had a sound with elements of something reminicent of a mixture of Hurts and Two Door Cinema Club. Sunday brought the to us once again the family parade, this year was no exception to the usual high standards of participation, with workshops, literature festival there is something for everyone at this family event. It brought a smile to our faces as one of the sponsors put on a not so little bowl of cereal for people to swim around in, image below, lots of fun was had!
