Madam Renards a Swindon based theatre company performed a musical adaptation called nights based on the famous tales of Arabian Nights, the production is written by Librettist Matt Fox and Composer Jessie Thompson. We attended the performance of Nights at Swindon’s small and intimate art museum and art gallery, surrounded by beautiful works that hung around us like supportive arms, creativity onlooking approvingly, the intimacy was upheld by soft lighting and limited audience numbers gave the whole experience a personal touch which embellished the feeling of exclusivity. We were treated to a story of two sisters Ria and Dee who manage to survive the murderous antics of the king The performance was an all female production with two singers and two musicians who helped weave the tale of life’s brutalities, loves, failings and strength of human beings when faced with adversity .
There is testament to the strength and quality of this adaption, I still hear the songs in my head and find myself humming the tunes and repeating to myself some of the lines from the show, ‘we will not give up our spirit’ this was something I identified most, a woman fighting against the tyranny of a control by man or social situations. Arabian Nights may be an old story but even in this so called modern age there can be found comparisons to this tale, the human fragility and strength stands as weak and strong as the history of mankind.
Matt Fox and Jessie Thompson brought a fresh and contemporary flourish of humour within their version of Arabian Nights, look out for further performances of musical excellence and story telling in the coming months.
